Celtic v AEK Athens - CL 3rd qualifying

on Wed 08 Aug 2018, 12:53 pm
Tonight sees the first leg in the Champions League 3rd Qualifying Round and Scottish Champions take on AEK Athens over the two-legged game.

Tonight Celtic are at home and will be without striker Moussa Dembele, who has a hamstring strain. In AEK Athens they face the current Greek Super League winners. Unlike Celtic this is the Greek's first game in the competition and they have not started in their league yet so hopefully Celtic will be match fitter having come through previous rounds in the Champions League.

Unfortunately the game is not being shown anywhere in the UK. Even the coverage on Celtic TV’s website is described as: ‘Live to overseas subscribers excluding Greece and Cyprus.’ The best option may be to listen to the audio on Celtic TV or on BBC Radio Scotland, other than going to the game in person.

After only managing a 1-1 draw at home Celtic now travel to Athens for the second leg with it all to do.
AEK have the away goal so it means that Celtic have to score or that away goal could be crucial.

It won't be easy in a fiery Athens but Celtic at least know they need to win to go through and don't want to rely on draws.

Celtic lost 2-1 last night and exited the Champions League. This is further proof if any were needed of the large strides that Scottish football have taken backwards over recent years. They are slowly becoming a third or even fourth class nation at football and can no longer compete with the average teams in Europe.

Brendan Rogers complained it was not strengthening in the summer but even without that they should surely be good enough to beat teams like this but the reality is they aren't.
What the continuing spiral backwards of  club sides in Scotland does is weaken any arguments Celtic ever had of wanting to join the Premier League. Whether this was ever likely it most certainly isn't now as they can't compete at a level against decent teams. They don't compete against quality opposition week in and week out in their own domestic league and slowly that has made that a mere spectre of what it once was.
Brendan Rogers harping on about strengthening, needs to look again and consider just what the gulf is and the quality of player they require. That is getting further and further away from them in terms of money as players of quality cost and they now look unlikely to be able to compete financially with the lower reaches of teams in the Premiership for financial clout and probably even the vast majority of Championship sides.
